Merwin's Wharf and Scranton Flats
Field trip report by Paula Lozano
On Sunday, January 26, 2020, Erik Bruder led a group of 38 participants from the Kirtland Bird Club and Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society on a field trip to Merwin's Wharf and Scranton Flats. Highlights included three Peregrine Falcons strafing three Great Blue Herons near Merwin's Wharf, a Bald Eagle cruising by the Federal Building and another Peregrine Falcon perched on a lift bridge tower. The highest numbers of birds were seen as the group walked the path from Fire Station 21 to the Scranton Flats fishing pier. The final trip tally was 17 species, with only four species of ducks (Mallard, Redhead, Lesser Scaup and Bufflehead) and two gull species (Ring-billed and Herring) observed. However, the lack of diversity of species and the cloudy, cool weather did not dampen the group's enthusiasm and enjoyment of birding along the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland's Flats in January!
