Field Trip to Castalia, OH

By Paula Lozano
Photos: Anna Kozlenko (Julnes)

On February 15, 2020, Paul Sherwood led a hardy group of Kirtland Bird Club and Black River Audubon Society members on a field trip to Castalia, Ohio. About 9:00 am it was sunny and 12°F and only got up to around freezing in the afternoon. With the wind chill, it felt a lot colder all day! The final tally was 26 species.

A variety of waterfowl was seen on the Duck Pond, including White-fronted Goose, Canada Goose, Trumpeter Swan, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard and American Black Duck. Hundreds of Horned Larks were found along the back roads. After lunch at the Cold Creek Cafe, half the group stopped at the entrance to the Castalia Fish Hatchery where two Bald Eagles were seen and a lot of Rainbow Trout. At our next stop Eurasian Collared-Dove was added to the trip list.

The last stop was on the causeway accessed from Bayview Drive in Bay View . Common Merganser and Ruddy Duck were seen there, as well as 22 White-fronted Geese and 2 Graylag Geese.
