Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 - The Wilds
5th Annual Wilds Winter Raptor Extravaganza
sponsored by the Ohio Ornithological Society. Target
species include: Golden Eagle, Northern Harriers,
Rough-legged and Red-tailed Hawks, Short-Eared Owls
& Northern Shrike. Also, attend a behind the scene
tour of the Rhino House. OOS needs a head count.

Friday, Feb. 12 -Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 - Sault
Ste Marie, Michigan
(3-night, 4-day trip) Bundle up and travel to the
Soo seeking winter migrants. Target species include:
Ruffed, Sharp-tailed & Spruce Grouse, Snowy & N.
Hawk Owl, Redpoll, Purple Finch, Boreal Chickadee,
Bald Eagle, Evening Grosbeak, Gray Jay, Long-tailed
Duck. Other possibilities include Harlequin Duck,
Black-backed Woodpecker, Gyrfalcon & Great Gray Owl.
We will depart on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and return
Monday around 7:00 p.m. Hotel/motel reservations
will be arranged. Participants will pay individually
for hotel and meals. Participants will share travel
costs (van rental, gas & tolls). Deposit of $25 with
registration.
Saturday, March 13, 2010 - Killdeer Plains
(Day trip) We will criss-cross the Killdeer Plains
Wildlife Area & Upland Reservoir in search of
wintering hawks, owls & waterfowl. Target species
include: Lapland Longspur, Snow Bunting, Horned
Larks, N. Saw-whet, Long-eared & Short-eared Owls,
Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Rough-legged and
Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Shrike, Pheasant,
Bob-White and, if there is open water, swans, ducks
& grebes.
We will depart at 6:30 a.m. and return in the
evening. Participants will share travel costs (van
rental, gas & tolls). Deposit of $25 with
registration.
Friday April 30, - May 2, 2010 - Hocking Hills
(2-night, 3-day trip) Join us in the beautiful
Hocking Hills area of southern Ohio seeking early
migrants and southern species. Target species
include: Kentucky, Blue-winged, N. Parula,
Worm-eating Warblers, Chuck-wills-widow,
Whip-poor-will, Black Vulture, Barred Owl, Carolina
Chickadee, Summer Tanager, Orchard Oriole, Pheasant,
Bob-White, Blue Grosbeak, Grasshopper &
Henslow's
Sparrows.
We will depart Friday at 4:00 p.m. and return Sunday
around 6:00 p.m. Hotel/motel reservations will be
arranged. Participants will pay individually for
hotel and meals. Participants will share travel
costs (van rental, gas & tolls). $25.00 deposit with
registration.

Friday, June 4 - Sunday June 6, 2010 - Roger Tory
Peterson Institute / Lake Chautauqua, NY
(2-night, 3-day trip) We will explore the areas
where Roger Tory Peterson grew up and tour the
Institute. Join us in exploring the Chautauqua
region from the lake plain to the higher elevations
(up to 2,000 foot) seeking the 25 nesting warblers
and other boreal species. Target species include:
Black & White, Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue &
Green, Blue-winged, Cerulean, Hooded, Mourning, N.
Parula Warblers (& more); Purple Finch, Red-breasted
Nuthatch, Blue-headed and Yellow-throated Vireos,
Swainson’s Thrush & Winter Wren.
We will depart on Friday at 2 p.m. and return Sunday
evening. Hotel/motel reservations will be arranged.

Pickerington Ponds & Other Columbus Area Parks
Day Trip
Trip Leader: Eileen Zimlich
Join us in exploring this Columbus area IBA
(Important Birding Area) where its wetlands are a
magnet for migrating waterfowl and shore birds.
Pickerington Ponds Metro Park is a 1,387-acre
preserve containing some of the last glacial kettle
lakes in Central Ohio. Over 260 species of birds
have been recorded in the area. Rarities at
Pickerington Ponds include: glossy ibis, American
avocet, marbled godwit, American white pelican, surf
scoter and little blue heron. Target species
include: shorebirds and waterfowl, Osprey, Northern
Harrier and fall migrants. There are several other
parks in the area which we may visit.
We will depart at 6:30 a.m. and
return in the evening. Participants will share
travel costs (van rental or car pool, gas) Deposit
of $25 with registration.

Lake Erie Metropark, Michigan - Hawk Watch
Day Trip.
Leader needed
This park is one of the premier hawkwatching sites
in North America and it is relatively close by.
Thousands of hawks follow the Lake Erie shore during
fall migration. Although many species may be seen,
mid-September is the peak for Broad-winged Hawk
migration. Target species: hawks.
Friday, Oct. 22 - Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, PA
3 day, 2 night trip. Trip leader Craig
Caldwell.) Visit the world’s longest-running hawk
migration count site during fall color time. We’ll
spend Saturday and Sunday mornings on North Lookout,
where we’ll expect to see from 100 to 1500 raptors
of as many as 12 species. Saturday afternoon we can
stay on the lookout if there’s a hot passage or
explore other parts of the sanctuary. We hope to
include a tour of the Sanctuary’s Acopian Center for
Conservation Learning, coordinator and clearing
house for world-wide raptor research projects. Prime
target birds include Northern Goshawk and Golden
Eagle, both reasonably probable, and the
almost-guaranteed Northern Harrier and
Sharp-shinned, Cooper’s, Red-shouldered, and
Red-tailed hawks.
Craig has six times taken groups to
Hawk Mountain for week-long outings. He’ll regale
you with tales of the Sanctuary’s history and lore
until you shut him up.
We will depart at 1:00 pm Friday and
return by 8:00 pm Sunday. Participants will pay
their own motel and meal costs plus a share of van
rental, gas, and tolls. The motel will be about $100
per person, double occupancy, for the two nights,
which includes light breakfasts. There’s also a $7
per day trail fee for (Sanctuary) non-members. A
deposit of $25 is required with each reservation.

Niagara Falls
Weekend trip.
Trip leader needed
Explore the Niagara river and Niagara-on-the-Lake
for winter migrants. The Niagara River has the
largest and most diverse concentration of gulls in
the world. It also hosts large numbers of wintering
waterfowl.
Target species: gulls, waterfowl. Passport
needed.
