Chimney Swifts: Nature’s Amazing Avian Insectivores
Judy Semroc Wed, Oct 7 @ 7PM (optional bird walk at 6PM) Nature Center at Shaker Lakes This program discusses natural history, behavior, human benefits and reasons for this species’ marked population decline. Learn how our help is needed NOW and how you can be a part of the solution. Judy is the founder of Chrysalis in Time‚ the first Ohio chapter of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). Judy also serves on the board of the Ohio Ornithological Society (Conservation Committee) and the Ohio Biological Survey. She has co-authored two natural history guides, "Dragonflies & Damselflies of Northeast Ohio” and "Goldenrods of Northeast Ohio: A Field Guide to Identification & Natural History.” For the past 20+ years, Judy was a Conservation Specialist in the Natural Areas Division of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. As a former Petroleum Geologist and science teacher, Judy loves to learn about and share her passion for the natural world through field trips, interpretive programs, and photography. Avian Connectivity Project in Greater Cincinnati
Ron Canterbury Wed, Nov 4 @ 7PM (optional bird walk at 6PM) Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Ron will discuss the current state of bird populations in Cincinnati and how KBC funding and the OAPI grant promoted avian conservation science. In addition, he will discuss how his team is using prediction science, including the Merlin app, to connect to on the ground long-term avian field science in an urbanized landscape in the context of avian conservation. Ron Canterbury is in his 22nd year at the University of Cincinnati where his duties include helping to direct an academic program in Anatomy and Physiology, teaching Anatomy Physiology I and II, Undergraduate Research, Biology Capstone, Ornithology, and occasionally Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, as well as conducting field research and training students in environmental science. He has 39 years of experience studying wild birds, is a state and national avian expert, has studied and worked on birds for more than 55 years, and he and his research team, students, and sub-permit banders have banded nearly 90,000 birds since 1993. Ron is a Master Bird Bander and Editor of the state of Ohio’s bird journal, The Ohio Cardinal. He is considered by many as a leading national avian expert, especially on early successional species and in the fields of ecology and conservation. He is a well-known expert on Golden-winged Warblers. Ron lives with his wife, Beverly, and three nearby adult children and a grandson in Anderson Township, Ohio. This event is free and open to all! |
