Sheldon Marsh State
Nature Preserve
Celebration
Saturday, September 18, 2004
The
Friends of Sheldon Marsh announces further plans for the
celebration of the founding, in 1954, of Sheldon's Folly
[Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve, just west of Huron
in Erie County]. Day-long activities will be held at the
Preserve and at Firelands College on Saturday, September
18th.
The entire day will be devoted to "living history."
Activities are designed to re-create fifty years of
conservation, education and history at that unique
location on Lake Erie.
Beginning with birdwalks early in the morning and
continuing throughout the day, the program will feature
animal and bird exhibits, nature education and
entertainment for children and habitat workshops with
hands-on experiences for adults.
Mini-workshops are planned which will focus on the
natural history of the woodlands, wetlands and the
unique barrier beach along Lake Erie. No reservations
are required for the daytime program. Everyone is
welcome....children are especially invited. No food
service will be provided, but many restaurants and
fast-food outlets are nearby. The mini-workshops will be
staffed by recognized experts in several areas of study.
Emphasis will be on the current research programs being
undertaken at Sheldon Marsh.
As the day closes, an informal commemorative dinner and
evening program will be held at the exciting, new Cedar
Point Center at Firelands College on Rye Beach Road.
Dress for dinner will be casual with an emphasis on
birdwatching or field trip attire.
Registration is required for the dinner and evening
program at the College. Specific information regarding
the purchase of registrations and the evening's
activities will be forthcoming in organizational and
individual mailings and in the area media.
The lead organization for this extraordinary historical
celebration: FOLLY@FIFTY is The Friends of Sheldon
Marsh. The "Friends" are supported in this effort by
Firelands Audubon Society, the Division of Natural Areas
and Preserves/ODNR, Division of Wildlife/ODNR, Erie
Metroparks, Firelands College and many other groups and
individuals.
