“Point Pelee consistently ranks
among the top spots for bird watching in the United
States and Canada,” said Melinda Huntley, executive
director of the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail National
Scenic Byway. “This is an amazing opportunity to be able
to bird watch Ohio’s top coastal areas and Point Pelee
during peak migratory time.”
Point Pelee National Park’s appeal
to migratory birds is its 12-mile, V-shaped peninsula
that welcomes exhausted birds flying over Lake Erie.
Nearly 350 species have been recorded at this park;
however, the spring spectacle attracts bird watchers
primarily seeking colorful songbirds such as warblers,
vireos, thrushes and flycatchers.
To experience spring migration on
both shores of Lake Erie, consider visiting one of
Ohio’s natural areas, such as Ma-gee Marsh Wildlife
Area, prior to the cruise. For areas to explore near
Lake Erie, visit. In addition to information about more
than 300 historic and natural places, the web site
includes a list of recent bird sightings.
Cost for the Lake Erie Birding
Cruise is $85 per person and includes roundtrip
transportation aboard the Jet Express, an onboard
