The pine and oak covered mountains and
canyons of Southeast Arizona are home to
many
birds not found elsewhere in the United States,
including the greatest numbers
of hummingbirds in
North America. Ten or more species of hummingbirds can
be seen in a
single day in Southeast Arizona, including Magnificent,
Blue-throated, Broad-billed
and Violet-crowned.
We will immerse
ourselves in the birds and rugged beauty of
the mountains or "Sky Islands" that rise above the surrounding desert,
enjoying some moderately rugged day hikes, mixed in with
more relaxing birding at such sites as Ramsey
Canyon, Miller's Canyon and Soniota Creek. While many
people think of Arizona
as a hot desert, the mountains offer temperatures and
humidity that can be far
more comfortable
than we experience in Ohio in July. We have timed this
trip to take advantage of Arizona's "Second Spring", as
life-giving rains arrive and turn desolate landscapes
into green vistas filled with wildflowers –and nectar
for hummingbirds. The rains also trigger the nesting
season for many species of southwestern birds.
Escape to the nature of the Southwest this summer – the
Hummingbird Islands of Ari-zona.
Participants should be moderately physically fit and
able to hike at a moderate pace for a few hours at a
time.
