Visiting Ben Winger
at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York
Mother's Day - May 9, 2004

Mother's Day weekend Bob Finkelstein, Paula Lozano and Jane Berger went to Ithaca, New York, to visit Ben Winger. Since Ben's classes had ended and finals were a week away, he had time to give them the grand tour of Ithaca, Cornell University and the Laboratory of Ornithology at Sapsucker Woods. In addition, they visited the fish ponds, the site of Dr. David Winkler's swallow project where Ben and Ted Gilliland worked during the summer of 2002. Besides seeing a lot of Tree Swallows, they watched Dr. Winkler -- aka "Wink" -- working with Ben in preparation for Ben's summer job at Dr. Winkler's Mono Lake, California, site. The following photos were taken on Mother's Day.

Paula took this photo of Bob, Jane and Ben at the entrance to Sapsucker
Woods Sanctuary.

Then Jane took this one of Paula
with Bob and Ben.

Half way around the Wilson Trail, Ben spotted a male Scarlet Tanager, the perfect Mother's Day present for Jane -- and Paula, too!

This was the view of  the Johnson Center for Birds and Biodiversity from the Sherwood Observation Platform.

Back inside the building, Ben gave them a behind the scenes tour. First stop was the Specimen Prep Room to see Ben's study skin of a Swainson's Thrush.

There were other study skins to see, too!

Dr. David Winkler (in background) met them at the fish ponds. While Jane, Bob and Paula  took a walk in a nearby woodlot,  Ben and Dr. Winkler caught and banded Tree Swallows and discussed Ben's summer project at Mono Lake, California.

It was hot work taking measurements inside "Wink's" mobile lab -
a vintage Volvo!
