Fall Census
September 10, 2005

As with last year, the weather
was most cooperative for counting birds. We had 42
participants (third highest number for a fall census) out in
14 teams. We spotted a record 107 species (103 was previous
high in 2000), including 24 species of warblers, but still
missed a few birds that we knew had to be there. Some
notables were first ever Purple Martins and Yellow-breasted
Chats on a fall census while the Golden-crowned Kinglet was
the first since 1989 when the fall censuses were held 2-3
weeks later in the year. While the Red-breasted Nuthatches
were highest ever, in 2001 we had 36. If you thought that
Cedar Waxwings and Common Grackles were high in numbers this
year, actually, they were higher last year.
I keep a database of all the
censuses (started in 1983) and I compare species totals from
a census year to the past ones. There does not seem to be
anything out of the ordinary. Some numbers from year to
year are remarkably close within a species. Even in cases
like American Goldfinch, over the last four years, we
counted 407, 372, 402, and 443. When I think how I count
goldfinches, this is amazing. Swifts—377, 392, 410-pretty
close over last three years.
Thanks for all your help and
enthusiasm. The spring census will be on May 13th,
2006. The totals from this year follow, with abbreviated
names but in taxonomic order, to save me some time.
