eBird: Good for the Birds, Good for You

Presented by Ken Ostermiller

eBird, a real-time, online checklist program, can help you keep track of birds you have seen and show you where other birders have found the birds you want to see. eBird is a citizen science project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. See a live demonstration of the eBird web site and learn how eBird can help you.

Ken Ostermiller is an avid birder who remembers his first bird identification as a Yellow-shafted Flicker (now a Northern Flicker) in Michigan when he was 7. He enjoys observing the common birds of an area as much as seeking rare birds. As a volunteer, he reviews suggestions of bird reporting hot spots in Ohio for eBird, a free online checklist program launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society

Guests are welcome!

No meetings in July or August,

Northwest Ohio Shorebird Banding Trip
Date: TBA

Leaving Cleveland metro-area 7 a.m.

We’ll visit a shorebird banding station in northwest Ohio with master bander Tom Bartlett. Tom will select a location the day before based on weather, migration, etc, but it would be either Ottawa NWR, Winnous Point or a private wetland in Sandusky.  Participation is limited to 20 participants (5 cars) in car pools. Each car can decide whether to bring lunch or have lunch in the area. We return in the late afternoon, time TBD depending on what birds are around. If you are willing to drive or wish to be a passenger (and contribute cash for gas!), contact Delores Cole at delorescoleARndtc.com or call 440 461-1084. First come, first served.

Summer Birding Bonanza
Saturday, July 2, 2011

We will identify bird species and watch for nesting behaviors.  Ohio’s nesting birds are particularly dependant on Ohio’s habitats for reproduction.  Are these bird populations declining or stable?  Once the survey is complete a book will be produced consisting of breeding species accounts. These accounts include maps that depict the statewide distribution of observations and the breeding status records. Maps will be accompanied by text that describes a species' current and historical status and distribution.

This is the last year for the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas II; help us get our birds on the map!

Times include:

7:30 am to get maps and split into groups
1:00 pm to turn in checklists, bring your own lunch, refrigerator and cooking facilities are available
7:30 pm to get maps for owling, bring audio equipment if you have it

Location:
Hidden Hollow near Lodi, 30 minutes south of Wellington
8672 Richman Road, Lodi, OH
Along the Black River and Killbuck Creek headwaters

All levels of birders are encouraged to participate in this citizen science project.  Tent camping is available on Friday and Saturday nights, contact Terri Martincic for details.
