Birds of
the Cleveland Region is designed to be an
integral part of any bird watcher's library. It is
a compilation of over 100 years of continuous bird
reports to The Cleveland Bird Calendar. The
book is more than a historical account. It
represents many local, long-term monitoring efforts
that have fully established patterns of breeding,
vagrancy and population changes in the
region. Researchers will thrill to the inclusion of
many specific dates and facts as to the occurrence
of an individual species. Backyard bird watchers
will be enlightened with the ability to assess
whether a given species would or could actually
occur in this part of North America. Small maps are
included for each species to let observers know if a
bird has ever been documented from that particular
county.
The
accompanying graphs of occurrence should be useful
for any birder who lives along the south shore of
Lake Erie from Huron, Ohio to Buffalo New York. The
species ac-counts chronicle all species known to
have occurred in the Cleveland region and reflect
accepted patterns of vagrancy for birds deemed
rare. Photographic documentations for some of these
rare instances are provided at the back of the
book. Sections are included that allow reader to
pre-dict bird occurrences at they progress from
month to month. Also, a portion of the book devoted
bird finding in the Cleveland area should prove
especially useful to any local or out-of-town birder
who wishes to explore new areas in the region.
